Play is a child’s natural language. Through play, children express emotions, communicate experiences, and work through challenges that may be difficult to put into words.
I provide child-led play therapy for children in North Tonawanda, Buffalo, and surrounding Western New York communities. In this space, children are given the freedom to explore while I provide therapeutic presence, reflection, and emotional containment.
Play therapy allows children to communicate and process experiences in ways that feel natural and developmentally appropriate.
Play therapy can support children who may be experiencing:
Anxiety
Trauma or stressful life events
Behavioral changes
ADHD-related challenges
Autism spectrum differences
School difficulties
Family transitions such as separation, divorce, or loss
Play therapy is not about directing or correcting behavior. Instead, it focuses on creating a safe and supportive environment where a child’s internal world can unfold at their own pace. As children feel safer expressing emotions, regulation skills strengthen and behavior often shifts naturally.
Parent consultation is incorporated as needed to help caregivers better understand their child’s emotional needs and support progress outside of therapy sessions.
Many children find it difficult to talk directly about their feelings or experiences, especially when they are overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure how to explain what they are going through.
Therapy does not require children to sit and talk about difficult experiences right away. Through play, creative expression, and developmentally appropriate techniques, children can communicate and process emotions in ways that feel natural and safe.
As trust develops, children often begin to share more about their thoughts and experiences. Therapy is paced according to each child’s readiness, allowing them to build comfort and regulation before addressing more difficult topics.
Parents play an important role in the therapeutic process. While play therapy sessions are primarily focused on the child’s experience, parent consultation is often incorporated to help caregivers better understand their child’s emotional needs and development.
Children benefit from having a private space where they can explore feelings freely. Because of this, specific details of what occurs during play sessions are not typically shared unless there is a safety concern. Instead, conversations with parents focus on themes that emerge in therapy, emotional patterns, and ways to support progress at home.
This collaborative approach helps children feel safe in therapy while also keeping parents informed and supported.
In some cases, elements of EMDR therapy may be incorporated into treatment in developmentally appropriate ways. When trauma or distressing experiences are impacting a child, EMDR techniques can sometimes be integrated alongside play therapy to support stabilization and processing.
You can learn more about this approach on the EMDR therapy page.
Play therapy can be helpful when children are experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges and may not yet have the language to fully explain what they are feeling.
